Cefmof Hosted Hydrogen Builders, Showing Hydrogen’s Shift from Plans to Practical Implementation

Toyota Mobility Foundation, the City of Jyväskylä, and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team have established Central Finland Mobility Foundation (“Cefmof”) and have been advancing activities aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and realizing a sustainable society.

On May 28th and 29th, Cefmof organized the “Hydrogen Builders” event in Jyväskylä, and we are pleased to introduce its key points. Under the theme “From Plans to Real Life,” the event brought together hydrogen developers, companies, cities, and research organizations as hydrogen moves from planning towards practical implementation, to discuss where the hydrogen economy is heading and what comes next.

Presentations highlighted applications in sectors where electrification remains difficult, including green hydrogen-based power supply for construction sites and events, as well as mobile energy solutions combining fuel cells and battery storage. In transport, Finland’s first hydrogen buses illustrated the shift from proof-of-concept to operation, with attention given to winter performance, refueling, and maintenance practices. At the same time, hydrogen distribution and refueling infrastructure were identified as important issues for further development.

The program also covered the role of cities as platforms for testing and innovation, along with international developments. Participants from Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, presented a Power-to-Gas ecosystem that converts renewable electricity into green hydrogen for use in industry and transport, demonstrating the development of integrated regional value chains. In addition to these examples, discussions addressed topics such as the use of multiple technologies, the accumulation of practical experience, and collaboration among industry, research, and public actors.
