Supporting Community-Based Carbon Neutral Initiatives that Address Local Needs
As Japan works toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, approximately 60% of municipalities nationwide have declared their commitment to carbon neutrality.(Source: Ministry of the Environment, “List of Zero Carbon Cities,” as of March 31, 2025)
To achieve this goal, it is essential to design and implement measures that reflect regional characteristics, while incorporating a wide range of knowledge and technologies.
Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) supports carbon neutral initiatives in local cities by working with academic experts to develop measures aligned with regional needs. Through collaboration with local governments as well as regional businesses and organizations, TMF aims to realize these initiatives, ensure their continuity and independence, and ultimately promote their social implementation.
In carrying out these activities, TMF looks beyond mobility, including transportation, to also encompass the energy sector, which is closely related to mobility and daily life. Building on the outcomes generated through these efforts, TMF also considers the expansion of initiatives to other regions, thereby contributing to the achievement of carbon neutrality across a broader range of communities. Based on differences in CO₂ emissions characteristics, three regions were selected as activity areas, as outlined below.
